NEW GENERATION: CHUNK DESIGN

Andrew Bezzina, Hugh Worthington, Will Wansey and Anton Grimes all met when they were studying industrial design at UNSW. Now, they work together as Chunk Design to create innovative products that re-use materials in creative ways.

This issue, we interviewed Andrew about Chunk Design’s work, processes and philosophy. Here’s what else he had to say…

On sustainability

“Sustainability can have many forms, whether it’s reusing materials that people no longer want, creating multiple-use products or investing the emotion of a person in a product so it has more value than a static object.”

On multi-purpose products

“If a product can do more than one thing, you’re saving yourself from buying another product. It saves people money, and it also saves producing more products and reduces landfill. It gives a product more meaning if it can serve multiple purposes.”

On the design process

“While you go through university, you’re kind of shaped and moulded by your tutors and it can be a kind of selfish process, because if someone wants to see something come out a particular way then, that’s the way it should come out. Since we’ve been out of school we’ve had time to create things of our own accord with no one else’s opinion.

On the ‘Foamboys’ tea set

“About 10 months ago we looked at sand casting, which is a process of creating a product in foam and imbedding that into sand and pouring molten aluminium into the sand. The molten aluminium fills in the space where the foam was, and the foam disintegrates. We’ve been indulging in a bit of that and we’ve created our own little furnace that heats up recycled aluminium and melts it down.”
